What this area converter does
Enter one value and its unit, and this converter instantly shows the same surface in the seven units people actually use: square meter (m²), square foot (ft²), square kilometer (km²), hectare (ha), acre, square yard (yd²) and the tarea, the traditional land unit of the Dominican Republic. Every calculation runs in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.
It comes in handy when a plot is advertised in tareas but the building plans are in square meters, when an international listing quotes acres or square feet, or when you need to hand a metric figure to a bank or land registry.
How to use it
- Type the amount in the Value field (decimals with a dot or a comma both work).
- Pick the source unit from the dropdown.
- Read the equivalents: the dark card shows the result in square meters — the reference unit for land records — and the white cards show every other unit.
- Tap any card to copy its value and symbol to the clipboard.
The method and the factors
Every area conversion routes through one shared base unit: the square meter. Your value is first converted to m² by multiplying by the source unit’s factor, then divided by the target unit’s factor. These are the exact factors to m²:
| Unit | Symbol | Equals (m²) |
|---|---|---|
| Square meter | m² | 1 |
| Square foot | ft² | 0.09290304 |
| Square yard | yd² | 0.83612736 |
| Tarea (DR) | tarea | 628.8 |
| Acre | acre | 4046.8564224 |
| Hectare | ha | 10,000 |
| Square kilometer | km² | 1,000,000 |
The Dominican tarea equals about 628.8 m². Historically it was defined as 100 square varas, and the vara varied by region, so 628.8 is the conventional modern value used by surveyors and the land registry.
Worked example
A lot is listed at 3 tareas. How big is it in other units?
- In square meters: 3 × 628.8 = 1,886.4 m².
- In square feet: 1,886.4 ÷ 0.09290304 ≈ 20,305 ft².
- In hectares: 1,886.4 ÷ 10,000 = 0.1886 ha.
- In acres: 1,886.4 ÷ 4,046.8564 ≈ 0.4661 acres.
So those 3 tareas add up to less than half a hectare — a reality check for anyone who pictures the tarea as a large area.
Hectare versus acre
These are the two farm units people mix up most. The hectare is metric: a 100 by 100 meter square, or 10,000 m². The acre is imperial and measures 4,046.86 m². That makes 1 hectare equal to 2.471 acres, and one acre a little under half a hectare. In Dominican tareas, a hectare is nearly 16 tareas (15.9) and an acre about 6.4 tareas.
Frequently asked questions
How many square meters is a tarea?
One tarea equals 628.8 m². That is the standard conversion used in the Dominican Republic. Ten tareas make 6,288 m², and one hectare is almost 16 tareas.
Which is bigger, a hectare or an acre?
The hectare. A hectare holds 10,000 m² and an acre 4,046.86 m², so the hectare is nearly 2.5 times larger: 1 ha = 2.471 acres.
How many square meters is my plot?
Enter the measurement as you have it — in tareas, feet or acres — select that source unit, and read the dark card. It gives the exact equivalent in m², the unit plans, permits and land registries ask for.
Are the factors exact?
The imperial factors (foot, yard, acre) are exact by international definition. The tarea uses the conventional value of 628.8 m²; if your deed relies on a different local definition, scale the result proportionally.
